Runaways make up the majority of the missing | journalstar.com

On Aug. 14, 2014, two days after the start of 15-year-old Lucero Najera Portillo’s sophomore year at North Star High School, she got into an argument with her mom and took off.

She left on foot, no suitcase, no plans. She was just gone, one more case in a long and fluid list of the young and the missing.

She is 17 now and still missing, her persistent absence both a rarity and a troubling example of the challenges of finding runaways — young people who leave home and don’t want to be found.
