L.A. PARKER: Media coverage missing when searching for lost non-Caucasians

If Erica Crippen had been Caucasian, blonde and beautiful, U.S. media outlets, both electronic and print, would have counted up the days since the mother of two went missing the night before New Year’s Day 2015.

Her face would have been plastered across every sign post from Cape May County Courthouse to Timbuktu while inhabitants in most U.S. households would have felt that a sister or super friend had gone missing. Stayed missing.

Crippen, a 26-year-old Mt. Laurel wife never became America’s real life “Gone Girl.” In time, her out-of-sight, out-of-social conscious condition made her almost non-existent, except for a concerned circle of friends and family, plus several Burlington County law enforcement divisions that continued investigations weeks after she turned up missing.
