Arizona a top state for most missing persons cases

Arizona is one of two states with the most open missing-persons cases per capita, according to a recent Huffington Post report.

Arizona joined Alaska in having more than 10 open missing-persons cases per 100,000 people. Huffington Post compiled the information using the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, or NamUs, and recent U.S. Census Bureau data.

There are 748 open missing-persons cases in Arizona and 109 in Alaska, according to NamUs. The census estimated Arizona’s 2013 population at about 6.6million and Alaska’s at about 735,000.

Huffington Post’s findings are somewhat misleading because figures were based on NamUs, a voluntary public database, and not the FBI’s National Crime Information Center, or NCIC, according to Phoenix police Detective Stuart Somershoe.
