On July 25, Eugene Bynum Jr. got a call from his wife, Susanne, who told him that his daughter and grandson had disappeared from their home on Gary’s West Side — a call that began an odyssey that continues for the Bynum family.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Eugene, father of Diamond Bynum, 21, who is developmentally disabled, and grandfather of 2-year-old King Walker. .

“Somebody has dropped the ball and it has put our babies in jeopardy,” said Daisy Bynum, Diamond’s grandmother and King’s great-grandmother. “This is a 2-year-old baby and a 21-year-old special needs child.”

Members of the Bynum family said they want to understand why neither an Amber nor Silver Alert has been issued for Diamond Bynum and 2-year-old King Walker, who have been missing since July 25.

King’s mother, Ariana Walker, said during a Saturday news conference that her fears grow worse by the minute.

“We don’t know for sure that they’re even still together,” the 25-year-old said. “We shouldn’t have to struggle with the police department too.”

GARY | A Gary detective used an extended snow brush and flashlight Thursday to get through thick grass in an open field near 27th Avenue and Delaware Street.

The sound of cars zooming by the nearby Interstate 80/94 were met with the sound of crunching branches. Detective Lt. Nelson Otano was searching the thick grass for a trail, disturbed branches or for any hint of Diamond Bynum and King Walker.

GARY | Gary police on Monday said they are calling off organized law enforcement searching for a developmentally disabled woman and her toddler nephew who went missing nine days ago.

“The resources have dried up,” Gary police Lt. Thomas Pawlak said.

Diamond Bynum, 21, and King Walker, 2, went missing the morning of July 25. Bynum’s stepmother told police she, Bynum and King lied down with King for a nap and when the stepmother awoke around 11 a.m., Bynum and King were gone.
