BROOKLYN, Iowa — Authorities said on Tuesday that they have charged a man living in the U.S. illegally with murder in the death of an Iowa college student who disappeared a month ago while jogging in a rural area.

Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent Rick Rahn said that Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 24, was charged with murder in the death of Mollie Tibbetts.

INDEPENDENCE, IA — The reward for information about missing University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts jumped to $260,000 over the weekend, according to Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa. The 20-year-old’s relatives think she may have been kidnapped and the money will help lead to her return.

“If someone has abducted her, we are pleading with you to please release her,” Tibbetts’ mother, Laura Calderwood, said at a news conference last week. “It is our greatest hope that if someone has her, that they would just release her and claim that money we have raised for her freedom.”

IA – MISSING: Search ongoing for 20-year-old UI Student | KCRG

BROOKLYN, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) – UPDATE – Police have sent searchers home for the day with no sign of missing 20 year-old Mollie Tibbetts.

UPDATE – At least 100 people are out looking for a missing 20 year-old woman in Poweshiek County.

Investigators now say Mollie Tibbetts was last seen dog sitting for at a friend’s house late Wednesday night. When no one heard from her Thursday, they reported her missing.
