WASHINGTON (WJLA) — Relisha Rudd’s mother, Shamika Young and her grandmother, Melissa Young joined dozens at the Deanwood Rec Center in Northeast D.C. Saturday afternoon to celebrate what would be the missing girl’s 10th birthday.

Rudd disappeared in March of 2014. She was last seen with Kahlil Tatum, the janitor at the D.C. General Homeless Shelter, where her family lived.

When police closed in on Tatum, police say he killed his wife, then himself. But there was no sign of Relisha.

The social worker from Payne Elementary School had a simple mission the day he drove to the D.C. homeless shelter where 8-year-old Relisha Rudd lived. He needed to get a doctor’s note.

By that Wednesday — March 19, 2014 — the second-grader had been absent from her Capitol Hill classroom for nearly three weeks without a written excuse. Relisha’s mother had said she was under the care of a doctor. LaBoné Workman, speaking publicly for the first time since Relisha went missing a year ago, said he talked to the man by phone, and then went to the family shelter to find him.

(WASHINGTON) — The search continues for an 8-year-old girl who vanished from the Washington, D.C., area in March, months after her suspected kidnapper was found dead — with her case getting renewed attention due to the case of a missing University of Virginia student.

Relisha Rudd was last seen with Kahlil Malik Tatum, 51, a janitor at the family homeless shelter where Rudd and her mother lived. Police believe Tatum, also facing charges for his wife’s murder, kidnapped Rudd before he committed suicide. He was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound on April 1 in Kenilworth Park in northeastern Washington, the FBI said.

The search for missing UVA student Hannah Graham has sparked renewed interest in Rudd’s case, as supporters turn to social media to urge the public not to forget about the young girl.
