The FBI has arrested a suspect in the case of Yingying Zhang, a 26-year-old visiting Chinese scholar. Zhang is presumed dead, according to a press release from the Department of Justice.

Brendt Christensen, 28, was taken into custody. On Thursday, law enforcement officials overheard him explain that he kidnapped Zhang.

URBANA, Ill. (WAND) – The FBI continues to help in the search for a missing scholar from the University of Illinois. They are now treating the case as a kidnapping.

Officers say 26-year-old Yingying Zhang, a visitor from China, went missing Friday afternoon. Surveillance video showed her getting into a black Saturn Astra at around 2 p.m. at the corner of West Clark Street and North Goodwin Avenue. The car then drove away.

URBANA — University of Illinois Police are investigating whether UI agriculture scholar Yingying Zhang may have called a ride-hailing service Friday afternoon before she was reported missing, releasing a video showing her entering a black car along North Goodwin Avenue.

“That’s something we’re pursuing,” said UI Police spokesman Patrick Wade, though he said that is standard in any missing-person case. “There’s a thousand different scenarios that could have played out here. We have a lot more work to do before we can say what it was and what it wasn’t.”

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WLS) — A University of Illinois student from Chicago has been missing since Sunday, his family said.

Vicente Mundo, 20, was last seen near the corner of Third and Chalmers in Champaign on Sunday night. His roommate told Mundo’s family that Vicente left their off-campus apartment to meet someone near his car around 6:45 p.m. Cell phone records show he made his last call around 7:12 p.m. Sunday.

CHAMPAIGN — Champaign police have asked for help in finding a missing teen who walked away from a group outing almost three weeks ago.

A release from the department said the guardian of Brandon Dominguez, 16, said he was last seen Aug. 12 when he separated from a group on the University of Illinois campus.
